Sony Launches PlayStation Productions to Adapt Games for Film and TV
May 20, 2019 - 5:43 PM - by Evil Avatar

Sony Interactive Entertainment has launched PlayStation Productions, a production studio that will mine the company's extensive catalog of video game titles for film and television. The new enterprise, headed by Asad Qizilbash and overseen by chairman of Worldwide Studios at SIE, Shawn Layden, is already in production on its first slate of projects and has set up shop on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City.

"We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories," Layden tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum."

With a library of more than 100 original properties ranging from adventure to sci-fi to action to mystery to horror, PlayStation Productions has a wide breadth of content ripe for adaptation. "Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves," says Qizilbash. "One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the PlayStation community loves."

While other video game studios, including Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard, have opened film and television arms to adapt their games for a different audience, PlayStation Productions differs both in its deep catalog of content and also in its approach to production. Sony Pictures, a sister company, will help with distribution, but production of projects will be handled by PlayStation Productions firsthand, not licensed out as is the case with similar enterprises at other game companies.

"For the last year and half, two years, we’ve spent time trying to understand the industry, talking to writers, directors, producers," says Qizilbash. "We talked to [film producer] Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Kevin Feige to really get an understanding of the industry."

And the new Batman is...
May 18, 2019 - 6:35 PM - by PacerDawn
Fox News is reporting that Robert "Twinklin' in the Sun" Pattinson is slated to replace Ben Affleck as Batman in DC's cinimatic universe.

Former “Twilight” actor Robert Pattinson will replace Ben Affleck in Warner Bros. upcoming film “The Batman,” according to multiple reports.

Affleck previously announced he would step away from the role of Batman after starring in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” as well as “The Justice League.” Each film received negative reactions from critics and comic book fans alike. He was tapped to direct a standalone Batman film, but relinquished those duties to Reeves in 2017.

Sources tell Variety that Pattinson is the top choice to be the new Caped Crusader. He is expected to close on the deal soon with the film currently slated to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
Normally, after Keaton did so well, I like to take a "wait and see" approach.

However, this time... have they lost their minds?

Rick and Morty Season 4 is on its way!
May 15, 2019 - 5:57 PM - by Evil Avatar

“Rick and Morty” Season 4 is on its way!

The hit Adult Swim series is set to return for its fourth season in November 2019, it was announced Wednesday at the WarnerMedia upfront presentation in New York.

Season 4 will premiere just over two years after the finale of Season 3 in October 2017, the longest gap yet between seasons of the show. Over a year elapsed between the Season 1 finale in April 2014 and the Season 2 premiere in July 2015, while there was nearly a two year break between the end of Season 2 in October 2015 and the first episode of Season 3 on April Fools Day 2017. Season 3 then resumed in July of that year.

It was announced last May that Adult Swim had given “Rick and Morty” a massive 70-episode order, which will bring the series to 101 episodes. The order is part of a new long-term deal the network has signed with series creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon.

The Division 2's First Raid Begins This Thursday
May 14, 2019 - 7:34 AM - by Evil Avatar

Ever since the release of The Division 2, players have been clambering for true raid content. Ubisoft has responded, and the first fruits of that labor are rolling out later this week. “Operation Dark Hours” releases this Thursday, May 16, beginning at 9:00 am Pacific, on all available platforms.

The raid is built as an eight-person activity, and details provided by Ubisoft make it clear that only the most experienced characters are going to be ready to face the challenges within; you need to have reached World Tier 5 and defeated Tidal Basin.

The Dark Hours raid takes you through the Washington National Airport, in order to halt the incoming flow of Black Tusk soldiers and supplies. Finish off the raid, and you can expect new gear including an exclusive exotic weapon.

Following in the footsteps of other MMOs and loot-focused shooters, Ubisoft also plans to acknowledge the team that snags the world-first completion. If your team wins that honor, your team photo and names to go up in the in-game White House for other players to see. If your team misses that honor, but still manages to complete the raid by May 23, you’ll get a commemorative arm patch. If you’re late to the party, but your team eventually finishes the raid at some point, you’ll get a dedicated clan banner and a trophy for your clan space.

Weekend TV Watching!
May 11, 2019 - 2:27 PM - by Evil Avatar

Would you stay put or climb up?

Started off my weekend viewing with a re-watch of Watchmen after seeing the new trailer for HBO's Watchmen TV series and then I picked up the Dark Knight Trilogy on Blu-ray. Hard to imagine I didn't already own these given the stacks of movies that I have. I started watching them in order last night, getting through Batman Begins.

This afternoon, we went to see Detective Pikachu. Fun movie. The kids seemed to like it a lot.

Over the weekend I'll be catching up on What We Do in the Shadows, I'm three episodes behind and I just started watching the new Netflix series, The Society. It seems a little "TV"ish, but people on twitter seem to like it so I'll give it a while to see if it grows on me.

What are you planning to watch this weekend? Just waiting for the new Game of Thrones or something else???

IT Chapter 2 Trailer
May 09, 2019 - 5:51 PM - by Evil Avatar

Evil resurfaces in Derry as director Andy Muschietti reunites the Losers Club—young and adult—in a return to where it all began with “It Chapter Two.”

The film is Muschietti’s follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed and massive worldwide box office hit “IT,” which grossed over $700 million globally. Both redefining and transcending the genre, “IT” became part of the cultural zeitgeist as well as the highest-grossing horror film of all time.

Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, “It Chapter Two” brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint Announced for PS4, Xbox One and PC
May 09, 2019 - 5:03 PM - by Evil Avatar

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint - Become an Elite Special Operations Soldier Behind Enemy Lines

Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the latest instalment in the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon franchise. The game will be available from October 4th 2019 on the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and Windows PC. After successfully rebooting the Ghost Recon formula with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, Ubisoft Paris has created an entirely new adventure, putting players back in the boots of the Ghosts, an Elite US Special Operations Unit, but this time they are stranded behind enemy lines, facing their toughest enemy to date.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a military shooter set in a diverse and hostile open world. The game will be playable solo or in up to four-player co-op. Players will discover Auroa, a mysterious island where the most technically advanced facilities meet wild and untamed nature. Home to tech giant, Skell Technology, Auroa has fallen into the wrong hands and all contact has been lost.

The Wolves, a lethal ex-US Military unit of former Ghosts gone rogue, have taken over the island. Led by Nomad’s ex-brother-in-arms, Lt. Colonel Cole D. Walker, portrayed by Jon Bernthal, they have reprogrammed Skell’s drones into killing machines and are ready to use them, no matter the casualties. Nomad and the Ghosts are sent in on a recon mission, but their helicopters are shot down. Injured, without support, and hunted down, players will live an intense military experience as they fight to survive, take down the Wolves and regain control of Auroa.

Steep slopes, accumulating injuries, and fatigue are new challenges for players to tackle as they test their survival skills in the varied terrains of Auroa. To overcome adversity, players will enjoy total freedom to accomplish their missions and have plenty of tactical options and tools at their disposal, including a set of new military features. They will be able to carry enemies and teammates’ bodies, blend into their environment with prone camo and set up camp with teammates in the bivouac to manage equipment, change classes, and fine-tune their strategies.

They will also be able to choose among thousands of customization combinations to create their perfect Ghost, and keep their character and progression through the game, in both the main campaign and Player-versus-Player (PvP), available at launch.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint will include a robust post-launch content support plan, with regular updates after launch. New story arcs, classes and features will be continuously added, and for the first time in a Ghost Recon game, a new type of endgame content: Raids.

Additionally, Ubisoft announced the Gold, Ultimate and Wolves Collector’s Editions of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint as well as the standalone Ubicollectibles figurine of Nomad:

• The Gold Edition will include the base game and the Year 1 Pass.

• The Ultimate Edition will include the base game, the Year 1 Pass and the Ultimate Pack.

• The Wolves Collector’s Edition will include the base game, the Year 1 Pass, the Ultimate Pack, a Ubicollectibles high-end figurine of Lt. Colonel Cole D. Walker, a Steelbook, exclusive lithographs, Walker’s dog tag, and a waterproof map of Auroa as well as the soundtrack.

• The standalone Ubicollectibles figurine of Nomad is available for preorder on the Ubisoft store.

Fans who purchase the Gold, Ultimate, or Collector’s Editions will have access to the game up to three days early. Fans who pre-order Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint will receive access to the Ghost Recon Breakpoint Beta closer to launch, as well as the Sentinel Corp. pack which includes exclusive gear.

For more information about Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, visit ghostrecon.com.

May 09, 2019 - 7:20 AM - by Evil Avatar

SEGA Europe, a subsidiary of Tokyo headquartered SEGA Games, is delighted to announce the acquisition of Two Point Studios, the Farnham-based developer behind the award-winning Two Point Hospital. Two Point Studios had been working with SEGA Europe in a publishing partnership capacity since January 2017 as part of SEGA Europe’s Searchlight programme. The Searchlight team look for exciting new development talent, working on new IP, with franchise potential, and this acquisition is the first of its kind of as a direct result of this internal initiative.

Two Point Studios was set-up in 2016 by Lionhead alumni, Gary Carr, Mark Webley and Ben Hymers, with the goal of creating accessible games with understated depth, set in atypical worlds. The trio set about assembling a 17-strong team, featuring talent from some of the best and most experienced developers, who between them have worked on titles like Black and White, Alien: Isolation and Fable at studios including Creative Assembly, Lionhead and Mucky Foot. On 30 August 2018, Two Point Hospital launched worldwide as a PC digital download, garnering critical acclaim and commercial success.

Following the acquisition, Two Point Studios becomes a wholly owned SEGA studio and a fully integrated SEGA Europe pillar, alongside Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive, Relic Entertainment, Amplitude Studios and HARDlight. Two Point Hospital will take its place alongside SEGA Europe’s other illustrious franchises like Total War™, Company of Heroes™, Football Manager™ and Endless Space™. The studio will continue to work on several exciting unannounced projects of which there will be more news in the coming months. For SEGA Europe’s Searchlight initiative, the ongoing task of seeking out the best new studios, ones that fit with SEGA’s ethos to deliver new IP with strong franchise potential, continues to gather momentum.

“We’re delighted to welcome Two Point Studios officially in to the SEGA family. As a relatively new, British-based developer with a global hit already under their belts, we knew we had to move quickly on this deal because they are an extremely attractive investment proposition with a great deal of talent,” said Gary Dale, President/COO for SEGA Europe Ltd. “The Searchlight team at SEGA Europe have done a fantastic job integrating the studio over the past two years and the studio have gone on to produce a fantastic title with clear franchise potential.”

“It’s a landmark step for Two Point Studios and we’re thrilled to be joining the SEGA family. We’re looking forward to executing the next phase of our plans as we continue to evolve Two Point County” said Mark Webley, Co-Founder of Two Point Studios. “It’s a hugely exciting time to be a part of Two Point and we are here today thanks to the hard work, passion and dedication of our small, but amazingly talented team here in Farnham and the incredible fans that have supported us throughout and guided our continued development of Two Point Hospital.”

Claptrap Claims Randy Pitchford Stole $12 Million from Gearbox Employees
May 07, 2019 - 7:16 AM - by Evil Avatar

You gotta love this one. PC Gamer is reporting that Claptrap voice actor and former Gearbox staffer David Eddings is claiming on twitter that Randy Pitchford stole $12 Million from Gearbox employees and that at one point Randy physically assaulted him.

As an aside, seems a bit conspicuous that he chimed in on my salary but didn't mention anything about the $12M of revenue he siphoned away from the employee royalty pool. FYI - GBX employees are asked to take lower salaries with the promise of royalty shares.
I ultimately offered to do it for “free” in exchange for past royalties owed plus an apology for something I’ve never spoken about publicly until now: Randy physically assaulted me in the lobby of the Marriott Marquis at GDC 2017.
You can't make this stuff up.

Chewbacca Actor Peter Mayhew Dies at 74
May 02, 2019 - 6:31 PM - by Evil Avatar

“Star Wars” actor Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the original trilogy, died on Tuesday, his family announced on his Twitter. He was 74.

He died at his North Texas home surrounded by his family, read the Twitter statement.

Though he spoke entirely in growls, snarls, and the occasional roar, Chewbacca’s unwavering loyalty to Han Solo made him one of the most beloved characters in the franchise. Much more than just the hairy co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon, Chewie’s dependability and trustworthiness helped the iconic Wookiee function as the series’ ultimate “wing man.”

He was discovered by producer Charles H. Schneer while working as a hospital attendant in London, and cast in Ray Harryhausen’s “Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.” The next year, he was cast as Chewbacca, the 200-year-old Wookiee.

Mayhew went on to appear in “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” “Revenge of the Sith,” “The Force Awakens” and “The Star Wars Holiday Special.” He was active on the “Star Wars” convention circuit and wrote two books, “Growing Up Giant” and “My Favorite Giant.”

His height was not due to gigantism, but he measured 7 feet 3 inches. George Lucas originally had his eye on bodybuilder David Prowse to play Chewbacca, but Prowse decided to play Darth Vader instead and Lucas went with the even-taller Mayhew.

Gearbox Caught Lying about Microtransactions in Borderlands 3
May 02, 2019 - 6:25 PM - by Evil Avatar

GameInformer caught *gasp* Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford lying about something new... this time saying that Borderlands 3 will not have microtransactions, except for all the microtransactions.

During a livestream dedicated to Borderlands 3's first-ever gameplay reveal, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford took the stage and told the audience that the upcoming game "won't have microtransactions."

To clarify, Pitchford is talking specifically about how you won't be able to buy weapons, gear, or anything that affects gameplay. Cosmetic items, however, are still purchasable with real money.

"We're selling cosmetic items, but we're not going to nickel and dime players," said Gearbox's Paul Sage in an interview with us. "DLC will come down the line, but the game won't have anything excessive."

Then he goes on a twitter rant, trying to claim he was only talking about Loot boxes, when he clearly said microtransactions. Randy, paying cash for cosmetic items is still microtransactions. Does this guy even listen to himself speak or is lying just a habit now like breathing???

World War Z Post-Launch Roadmap Unveiled

Saber Interactive's World War Z unveils post-launch content roadmap on PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Windows PC

Saber Interactive's World War Z unveils post-launch content roadmap on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC New Tokyo Mission, Enemy Zombie Type, Six-Skull Difficulty Setting, Weekly Challenge Mode and More Arriving Soon

Saber Interactive, in partnership with Focus Home Interactive, has announced the first phase in its post-launch content roadmap for World War Z, the action-packed co-op shooter inspired by Paramount Pictures’ blockbuster film. After celebrating more than 1 million units sold in its first week of launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC via the Epic Games Store, the World War Z team is moving forward to deliver new gameplay, features and improvements to the game month to month.

In May, a brand-new mission set in Tokyo will drop alongside a terrifying zombie type that spits a deadly virus and can resurrect if not properly dispatched. June will bring a new six-skull difficulty setting with a unique reward, as well as bonus cosmetics and more. And in July, players can discover the new Weekly Challenge mode, plus additional cosmetics and other goodies.

Other major upgrades in development for further free updates include a wave-based survival mode, private lobbies, the ability to switch classes during PvPvZ matches, field of view (FOV) and level of detail sliders on PC, and more.

Powered by Saber’s dynamic Swarm Engine™, World War Z unleashes hundreds of fast-moving, bloodthirsty zombies – able to move and strike as one collective herd as well as break off into individual attackers – at a time on players. Choose from six distinct classes and an arsenal of deadly weapons, explosives, turrets and traps. Outlive the dead through intense four-player co-op campaign missions around the world, including New York, Jerusalem, Moscow and Tokyo, and battle both zombies and real human opponents in competitive, team-based Players vs. Players vs. Zombies (PvPvZ) multiplayer.

World War Z is currently available digitally and at most major retailers on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $39.99, as well as Windows PC via the Epic Games Store for $34.99.

Pure Evil - Hot in the City
May 01, 2019 - 8:37 PM - by Evil Avatar

With the return of the 100+ degree weather you are going to start seeing more car accidents from people who are hot and tired and just want to go home.

Yes, I got hit today by some Goober who tried to go around me on the drivers side, scraping the living heck out of the entire side of his 4-door Jeep and then he hit someone else on the drivers side at the same time. It's like the perfect storm of bad luck for that guy.

I'm getting away with a little fender scrape they can just sand out and paint and a cool story to tell. This guy is going to have to explain why his damage is so bad on one side and worse on the other.

PlayStation Plus Free Games for May: What Remains of Edith Finch, Overcooked
May 01, 2019 - 7:51 PM - by Evil Avatar

Greetings, PlayStation Nation! We’ll be adding two new titles to your monthly PS Plus on May 7: one is a slow-burning exploration of family tragedy, and the other a red-hot couch co-op mashup of cooking, puzzles and chaotic, laugh-out-loud fun.

Let’s take a closer look:

What Remains of Edith Finch

From the creators of The Unfinished Swan, the award-winning What Remains of Edith Finch is a highly original and often surreal experience. As the last of the cursed Finch family line, visit your family’s old family home and discover more about your relatives’ untimely deaths through unique interactive storytelling.

Sombre, thought-provoking and at times deeply moving, What Remains of Edith Finch is one of this generation’s most understated gems. If you missed it the first time around, now is your chance to experience it. Winner of Best Game 2017 from the British Academy Games Award (BAFTA), Best Narrative award at the Game Developers Choice Awards 2018 and more, developer Giant Sparrow’s follow up to their debut release, The Unfinished Swan, is a truly a special experience.

Built specifically with local co-op play in mind, Overcooked! is a fun, frantic and often hilarious experience for up to four players. You and your friends will join forces to become a team of chefs and work against the clock to turn out dishes for hungry customers. With a strong emphasis on teamwork and timing, you’ll need to communicate with each other to chop vegetables, fry steak, stir sauces, plate-up finished meals, and more — all without the kitchen catching fire!

With its cute and colorful stylings, huge range of dishes and kitchen layouts, easy controls, accessible gameplay and a focus on silly, over-the-top antics, Overcooked! is the perfect party game for gamers and non-gamers alike. Play solo or enjoy couch co-op and competitive modes for up to four players.

Both What Remains of Edith Finch and Overcooked will be available to download from PlayStation Store on May 7.

In the meantime, you still have a few days left to pick up April’s two PlayStation Plus titles. Conan Exiles is a wholly unique take on the survival RPG genre that transports you back to the very dawn of civilization, while The Surge is a brutal and rewarding action-RPG journey through a dark sci-fi dystopia. If you haven’t downloaded these yet, fear not: both will be available to download for PS Plus members until May 6.
