Learn 3D Modelling, Free

When I find cool nerd stuff I'm into I usually end up sharing it on EvAv with you guys, that's pretty much my modus operandi around here. This is no different:

I'd like to get into 3D modeling, not merely for the sake of 3D printing, although I do have several projects in mind for that!, but so I can visualize certain designs for seasteading and the like.

It's also a skill that could come in handy in game design, should you want to get into that.

Anyway, Autodesk makes the super-powerful AutoCAD software that's well known in the industry, and has setup a website to make it easy for people to learn to model, including releasing what I'd call several starter apps in modeling for people.

123D is their (free) starter modeling package.
Quote:
123D Design is a free, powerful, yet simple 3D creation and editing tool which supports many new 3D printers.

But now they've branched out significantly into modeling electronics with 123D Circuits, 123D CNC for running a home 3D router, 123D Creature for doing character modeling, and quite possibly the coolest thing--an app for your smart phone that can turn photographs into a 3D mesh! Called 123D Catch. Can't wait to try that out.

I really could've used that when I was at the museum awhile back. There's a bunch of things there that are just so intensely cool that I would've loved to print out a copy of. You wouldn't download a sculpture, would you? :P

Here's a vid of it in action:

3DS Max is "free" and there's lots of good online tutorials for free.

It's also a bit like using a tokamok to light a camp fire. I suggest 123D as an introduction to modeling.

This is a cool thread. I think learning 3D modeling will become a very common skill once 3D printing really takes off.

Courtesy of /r/3dmodeling I've learned that Steam has a modeling program for $150 that is apparently very, very good, called MODO:

(Plus, geek moment, Wings is written in Erlang! And is also open source.)

Of course, who could forget Blender.

Free, OS.

You know, after 123D being too limited to do what I need, and commercial solutions being too expensive, I'm going to put some time in on learning Blender.

Blender's new cycle render allows for fluid simulation, awesome stuff:

Wish I had a Nvidia card it could drag some CUDA out of. But it works just fine on CPU too, especially with multiple cores.

I know a kid in a magnet school learning programming in 3rd grade. Man, I wish that had been my experience.
