The update box went away for me. Guess they found out I'm running a bootleg copy. Oh well. I'm happy with 7 and eventually a bootleg copy of 10 will get out and by then I'll know if I want it.

How do you guys feel about this release gathering all your information for targeted ads? I'm not comfortable with MS being this shady. Gonna go back to 8.1 or 7 in the near future.

You can apparently turn off the data gathering. Thread on that on /r/Windows10.

My question is, should I upgrade to Windows 10-N, the European version that lets you select your media players and the like. That's appealing, I don't use MS media stuff. But I dunno if that might cause a problem in the future by not being on the US distro?

Supposedly, if you wanna do a clean install from Win7 or Win8 here are the steps:

1) Upgrade your PC using the "Get Windows 10" or by forcing upgrade with media download tool.
2) Activate Win10
3) Find upgraded product key using something like Produkey
4) Now "format" and do a clean install of Win10 using the ISO created with the media download tool.
5) Enter your "upgraded" Win10 product key and Activate.

Simple!

Well, in my defense, we have eight computers in the house here, all of which are on either 7 or 8.1 except for one daughter's laptop, which is on Vista.

I'll have to buy a copy I guess. Or...something.

Eventually they plan to re-open the Windows Insider program (no firm date given). At that point you will be able to download Windows 10 ISO for free. However you will have to login using a Microsoft Account and it will provide Microsoft telemetry data and your OS will always be "beta".

The new process for updating Windows 10 features (not patches) will be --

Test Internally
Test with Insiders
Test with Home Users
Then deploy to enterprise.

No problems with it so far, except at first it didn't see my Geforce 670, but that fixed itself after a single reboot. It's ok. I do kinda like things like having a detail weather tab right on the start menu. The ads for Xbox shit and the like also on the start menu are a bit annoying however.

I don't think it's acceptable, it's pretty lame IMO. OS X is free and has no ads, fuck MS.

There are no ads in the OS. There are ads, however, on the internet and in apps.

Didn't see the icon on my machine, had to download two KB's and all's good. There is no chatter at work about it so I'm guessing nobody has ran with the beta up to this point. Now to sit back for a minute and see how it goes before pulling the trigger myself.

There's icons right in the start menu directing you to the xbox store. That qualifies as ads to me.

...That's not the Xbox store, that's Xbox. Literally. It connects to your Xbox live account and see your friends list, messages, achievements, etc. You can also stream Xbox One games to your PC through it or use it to control your Xbox One. (In theory, I don't have an Xbox One so I don't know how well it works.)

Yeah, there are a few "ads", in the form of Windows Store (only place to get apps) and I think I remember a "Get Office!" but like everything else on the start menu, you can just remove them. They don't display actual advertisements.

Right, ads for MS products, it's not a huge deal but they're there. Also they made Solitaire a pay for app of all things.. Solitaire.

Solitaire isn't pay. It's completely free. You can pay if you want to remove ads from the online portion of the game. Which they added online tournament style things.

I'm not going to pay for it, there's no reason too. They did the same thing with mahjong. I think its silly, but, as long as you don't touch the online portion, you won't see ads anyway.

Almost all previous versions of windows came with "buy office" starter kits, every version of Mac OSX comes with Itunes and the Mac store stuff. Even linux comes with an app store these days. Were you hoping this was windows 98?

I just helpd my girlfriend upgrade and she actually has a few more tiles that are more ad-like than what happened on mine (such as "get candy crush!"). Maybe its a per vendor thing?
