I don't have brand new hardware to test it on, but a converted key worked for my older laptop (where I did a complete format and then fresh install.)

Actually, not entering a key might be dangerous. It will work now, but you don't upgrade a previous key in the process and will propably end up without a upgraded license after the upgrade period, still having your old license (which would not be "consumed" in the process) but having to pay for Windows 10.

And thanks for that information, Syl. I am still angry at MS for making this all such a hassle, but hey, the've never dealt with upgrades before, riiiigggghhttt?

I tried the Reddit method with no success. Running wuaucli produced no result, either through the system folder or admin-cmd. My update history displayed Error 80240020 nine times, so I am going to assume something in my Windows 7 install was preventing the upgrade. I bit the bullet and used the Media Creation Tool because my girlfriend was getting daily prompts to upgrade and I promised I would explore the madness before she entered.

Did you read:

Quote:
If Windows update gives you Error 80240020:

You do not have to re-download or delete anything.
run regedit.exe, navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade] and add/edit DWORD (32-bit) "AllowOSUpgrade” = 0x00000001
Open cmd.exe as administrator and run "wuaucli.exe /updatenow"

If you are willing to be a perpetual beta tester -- you can always get Windows 10 for free by joining their insider program. You will have to run their beta builds and use a Microsoft Account so they can get telemetry data, but it is a free OS.

https://insider.windows.com/ -- I am not sure if they are taking applicants at the moment, but they will re-open it soon. They had shut it down prior to the launch of Windows 10 to focus on the launch, but it is supposed to be starting up again shortly.
