Microsoft: Xbox One Elite Controller Has "Exceeded Our Planning" #XboxOne

GameSpot has the story.

Quote:
Demand for the $150 Xbox One Elite controller has surpassed Microsoft's original planning and the company is now "working to get more in stock." That's according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who talked more about the demand for the sold-out controller in an exchange with fans on Twitter recently.

"We are working to get more in stock," he said to one person. "Sorry they've been so hard to find."

Asked by another if they could expect to be able to buy an Elite controller before Christmas (December 25), Spencer wouldn't say yes or no.

"It's tough, as I don't want to over-promise," he explained. "Demand has just exceeded our planning. If you find one and you want it, pick it up, sorry."

The Xbox One Elite controller launched at the end of October alongside Halo 5: Guardians. The pad's premium price point did not scare people away, it seems, as the controller sold out quickly. Right now, the controller remains sold out at places like Amazon, GameStop, and Microsoft's own store.
If Sony released a PS4 controller that had a much better build quality (plenty of room to work with there), and battery, I'd be the first in line.

In my view this controller is the biggest success MS has had this generation. I'd love one myself, but it's a luxury I can't really justify when I have completely serviceable 360 controllers all over the place (and that controller was/is a really solid one).

Go rechargeable, like PlayStation controllers.

The only reason disposable batteries are still widely used in the US is because Washington is overrun with crooked politicians.

Plug it in and it becomes completely wired.

I wish I could afford one of these things but price is just crazy. With all the demand I can't see them dropping it any time soon either. :-/

The only ones buying this are kids looking to suck less at Halo. Creating an artificial demand by limiting your initial stock is an old trick.

I don't get it. I briefly tried one at Gamescom, and it felt awkward and cramped (kinda like a Swiss Army knife).

Is there anything in particular that warrants the 200% premium?

Finally underside levers are getting their due. I've been a fan since I got an old MS Sidewinder that feature some underside buttons and they are incredibly sweet to use, perfectly positioned. The whole shoulder button phenomena pales in comparison.

PS4 controllers plug right into microUSB already. Does the XB1 controller not?

Much like the 360 controllers, you need to buy a the rechargeable battery separately.

Its very much worth the cost, though; the charge lasts forever.

This would mean something if you couldn't, y'know...recharge them.

Since you can, it's not a big deal. I'd much rather not have a gaming session accidentally cut short because I don't have any spare batteries lying around the house.

I could not agree more. Screw wireless. I prefer a wire dammit, and no batteries (even worse when you can't replace them!).

The ability to accept AA's is actually the reason why I prefer xbox controllers to ps4's. That way I can keep spares sitting in the charger and never have to plug my controller in. And if the batteries fail to hold a charge, you don't have to replace the whole controller.

The trick is finding the right rechargeables. IMO, Eneloops are easily the best. Their main selling feature is that they maintain their charge when not in use (70% charge after 10 years), so they're fantastic for wiimotes and alternate controllers that see infrequent use.

The only issue I have noticed though is the xbox isn't able to adequately guess battery charge levels. Eventually it will say 'low batteries' then 20 seconds later it dies. But, eneloops are rated at 2000mah vs xbox rechargeable's 1400mah.

People believe you can't replace controller batteries? People only own one controller? People don't use charging stations?

I got the Xbox One Elite bundle last Thursday and I used the Elite controller over the long weekend and this thing is sweet. Super high quality construction, a bunch of customization and those paddles are really good.

The elite feels much better than the Scuf controllers. I really wish Sony would make something with this amount of quality for the PS4. I'd get one in a heartbeat!

Oh and it came with a detachable braided USB cable that you can use if you don't like messing with wireless and batteries. I have 16 AA Eneloops at home though and I always have several of them always charged, so that has never been a problem for me.

Agreed. By the way, there is NOTHING wrong with the DS4 build quality at all besides the thumbstick material rubbing off which has been fixed for a over a year now. It could use even better triggers yes. The Xbox One Pro controller is ridiculous, no way I'd use that thing.

Also that charging station is shit. Had one, threw it in trash. You need to import the actual Sony-made one from Japan which wipes the floor with that piece of junk:

I got an Xbone controller as I heard they were bringing out the dongle and liked to try one out. I used to have it wired in to the PC to use everyday even though I have wireless 360 pads to use as it feels nicer. Then someone knocked it off the table and it landed on the cord going into the pad, which is really weak btw, and now won't stay connected. So due to that terrible design I will be sticking with the more robust 360 pads.
