Just Cause 3 Reviews #JustCause3

USgamer - 4.5/5

Quote:
Avalanche Studios returns with another sandbox of destruction. Just Cause 3 is a lot like Just Cause 2, but a host of additions including the wingsuit and gear mods make the game a joy to play. Add in some amazing graphics, stunning explosions, and a huge world and you have a nearly perfect title. One only brought low by online connection issues.
PCGamesN - 8/10

Quote:
Itís impossible to deny that there are a number of things that Just Cause 3 doesnít do very well, and a lot of the things it does brilliantly are very similar to its predecessor. But all of this is easy to forgive when your adventure in Medici plasters a grin across your face for the duration. And so much of what could do with serious improvement, like the shooting and driving, could never live up to the joy you feel when youíre soaring through the skies or planting explosives all over a powerstation and unleashing them all at once.

Why would I want to drive a car or shoot an assault rifle? I just dropped a tank out of a cargo plane and, while surfing on said tank, blew up a jet that was in pursuit with a rocket launcher.
Game Informer - 8/10

Quote:
Mediciís three islands have an abundance of places to destroy, and I had a good time liberating the nation overall. Avalanche does a good job of giving players access to new tools just as it seems the novelty is close to wearing off, right until the end. By the time I finished clearing out the final outpost, however, I was definitely ready to move on. Mediciís a great place to visit, but Iím not prepared to make it a new home Ė certainly not considering the state I left it in.
GameSpot - 8/10

Quote:
When Just Cause 3 is consistent, however, it's a stunning display of cause and effect, as watchtowers topple into fuel tanks, which blow up nearby helicopters, which sail into oncoming vehicles. I often spent hours setting up outlandish chain reactions, or trying new gear mods, knowing full well I wasn't making any progress in the traditional sense. I was content to just sit back and marvel as it all happened.

But there's a more thoughtful undercurrent as well. Despite the explosions and instant gratification throughout, Just Cause 3 also encourages experimentation and foresight, planning and careful approaches. The results are as rewarding as they are entertaining.

Editor's Note: The majority of our time with Just Cause 3 was spent with the PC version, followed by several hours on both PS4 and Xbox One. Based on the review builds provided, the game performed better on PC, with higher and more stable frame rates, fewer bugs, and better looking environments. However, the problems did not affect the overall experience enough to impact individual scores.
IGN - 8.0/10

Quote:
Just Cause 3 is a playground where you get to be a physics-defying force of destruction, and its loop of liberating dozens of towns across this enormous scenic world wouldíve gotten old much quicker if the combat wasnít so full of options for free-form mayhem. Getting the most out of it requires some creativity and tolerance for performance bugs on your part, so come expecting to make at least some of your own fun.

[Editorís Note: This review was conducted on the PC version, which we obtained from Square Enix first. Our early impressions of the console versions show that itís identical in content, but weíve seen significant performance problems, including extremely long load times and significant frame rate issues that will require further testing to fully evaluate. Our PlayStation 4/Xbox One review will follow later this week.]
PC Gamer - 67/100

Quote:
Itís not a bad game: just an underwhelming one. There are moments of wonderful, anarchic chaos that make you feel like the worldís coolest action hero. And itís an amusing physics playground, letting you tether objects with your grappling hook cable and tighten it to violently smash them together. But these things, as fun as they are, can only hold your attention for so long, and boredom soon sets in. All the massive explosions in the world canít hide the fact that Just Cause 3 is marred by busywork and simplistic design.
VideoGamer - 6/10

Quote:
The technical issues don't end there, especially on Xbox One, which suffers from crippling frame rate dips and gargantuan load times. I played it on PC, and while the former issue isn't as prevalent, the latter remains: not to the same extent, but it's still noticeable. Worse were the infrequent crashes and hangs, which I encountered three times while playing.

There's a lot to do in Just Cause 3, it's just that doing it all isn't really that much fun. In fact it's probably a better game in retrospect than it is when you're playing it: freed from the controls and other issues, you'll remember it fondly. You'll also likely want to get back to it: there's a moreish, Ubisoft-style vibe here that encourages repeated playing. Those of you that wanted Just Cause 2 Part 2 will love what's on offer, but it all feels lesser than the sum of its parts.

I wonder if part of the reason why developers do open world games is because they feel like if they throw enough things at the player they will get people to overlook all the bad and find enough to like to give it an A-score. I feel like most recent open world games get great scores despite reviewers having a laundry list of things that the game does poorly.

It's biggybacking, similar to what happened with the success of platformers after Mario, FPS' after Doom, JRPGs after FFVII, H&SRPGs after Diablo, MMOs after EQ and then again after WoW, etc. etc. A-RPGs and Open World titles are hot after Skyrim and GTA IV-V, so we're getting a spate of them. Like Sleeping Dogs, Square likes to pack more features and minigames to make up for the smaller scope and less attention to detail than found in Bethesda and RockStar titles.

I have only played the first one and I remember it as being shallow and repetitious. Heard great things about JC2 though and this game looks even crazier. Perhaps they have gone the way of Saints Row 3, where everything is just batshit insane and it stops being fun?

No, it just because it more of the same and people are getting tired of it. If you love that sort of thing then you will love this game.

The series was always mediocre without mods. You're insane if you bought this on a console.

Utterly brilliant move by the developers to create the long load times as incentive to not die.

No Problem. Take some time to reflect on your choices and how they have brought about your ruin. Ok. Done? Great, go back to grappling a c4 layered cow to a helicopter then crash it all into a refinery.

Excessive exposure to porn leads to a short attention span and the inability to speak in complete sentences.

Long loading times were horrible in BB and inexcusable in Just Cause 3. I'll just lie to myself and believe Evil is trolling rather than being a shill.

All three versions of the game have the same problem. ie, memory leaks that lead to super-long loading times after playing for a while.

This is less evident on PC's since most of us have gaming PC's that are faster than the Xbone/PS4 and/or are using SSD's.

I'm sure if you are one of the people who swapped out their PS4 drive for a SSD or hybrid drive, the load times are probably not that bad.

It is looking like the Xbone version is the worst of the bunch. I was going to try it myself, but it is a 40 GB download on Steam and knowing that it has problems I think I'll hold out to see what happens in a future patch.

I was never much of Just Cause 2 fan anyway. I thought it was fun to blow stuff up, but really really really (really, really, really) repetitive.

Great story is what keeps GTA from being dull and Just Cause 2 didn't have it in the story department.

Playing on my cray of a PC. Games are on a pair of stripped 512 SSD drives.

1 - Longish load times but not terrible. That non-skippable intro you have to see every time you start is a kick in the nuts.

2 - Driving kinda sucks. It was fun in JC2, the wheeled vehicles all feel heavy and awkward. The 'copters are fine.

3 - Like Arma, you have to keybind for each vehicle type and for on foot. I see no benefit to making the car work differently than on foot.

4 - You can keybind the came key to multiple functions. I accidentally bound mouse1 to "select dual wield weapon" so every time I fired the machine gun it would switch to my empty pistols. The reason I mis-bound is..

5 - If you alt-tab out of the game then alt-tab back, the mouse won't register properly with the menu's or map. In my case I had to click 2" to the right of what I really wanted to click on.

6 - The tutorial messages will appear over top of what you're supposed to click on and there's no way to dispose of them other than actually going through the motions. Escape won't stop the tutorial stuff.

The potential is there. Even with all the problems I had, I still had fun blowing shit up. It's just in heavy need of a patch. I had fewer problems with F04 (none really).
