True. Does the machine have any other purpose besides gaming?

Nah, it's purely a replacement for his aging and constantly breaking alienware laptop. It's purpose is to bring the level of pretty on PC games to something on par with a Xbox One and PS4 therefore negating any reason to buy either. I imagine other than gaming it will mostly be used for shopping and porn.

So just games and porn, then. AMD should be sublime.

Reviews are going up.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7400/t...-feat-asus-xfx

Not gonna lie, I think its a very sexy looking card.

The review appears to be missing pictures. Important pictures.

Time to do some reading, though anyone wanna read through it and summarise for me would be appreciated :P

Wish the naming system for these cards and pricing structures wasnt so convoluted though!

They're basically re-brands and the entire article is to drive page views with very little information while sucking the cock of AMD and getting paid for it like a whore. They don't even have info on the card that matters which is the R9 290X. The naming scheme is already annoying as hell... Basically this doesn't mean shit unless you're on a severe budget and we won't know any real details for at least a few days. I can't wait to see them get stomped with Nvidias new lineup.

Mine is sexier and has red stripes so that means it's faster. Meanwhile AMD features the red rings of death.

In a nutshell:

Every R200-series card below the 290 is a rebrand of a 7000 card that will launch at the retail price the previous card occupied. The R280 is a 7970 and will launch at the current 7970 MSRP. AMD will slash the 7000 prices to ditch the inventory. Currently, R-series cards do not count for the Never Settle bundle. The correct action if you want a new AMD card is now to wait 2 weeks for the R290 review and then to buy 2 7970s at what will presumably be their all time low price despite being more or less equal to the 280 sitting next to it on the shelf.

The R9 270x isn't a rebrand and thats also at the price point where I'm most interested. However, the fact that its not going to be any faster than the 7970 means that its also launching at a price point where it simply won't be competitive. Especially because its lacking in the "three free full price game" bundle.

To that end this means we’re still going to be looking at the same GCN feature set schism. R9 280X and R9270X are of course based on the original GCN architecture, while the Bonaire powered R7 260X is based on AMD’s revised GCN architecture. Since AMD has still not officially assigned names to these architectures, and because “Sea Islands” has been badly mangled by now, we’re going to continue referring to these architectures as GCN 1.0 and GCN 1.1 respectively. At least until such a time where they get a proper name out of AMD.

With that said, while AMD is doing their best to drop codenames, they are technically still alive and kicking. Our R9 270X reference card is labeled Curacao, for example, despite the fact that it’s based on the venerable Pitcairn GPU. So AMD still has codenames internally, apparently including new names for existing GPUs.
All the cards except the R290X are relabel. Heck, maybe they'll pull a switch an the R290X will be a 7990 that doesn't melt or require a fusion generator to run.

No. http://www.techspot.com/review/722-r...-270x-r7-260x/ They are all rebadges. The only new gaming cards are the 290s. I dunno if we all managed to misread the announcements for the past few weeks or if this is a complete swindle.

Looks like I will just get a 7970 when they are clearing them out for the kids PC.

Mantle is the only thing that sounds great, but those benefits probably wont be around for a few years. BF4 being the soonest opportunity to see if it is worth a thing or not.

I can't recall, is Mantle only available in the 200 series cards?

That card makes no fucking sense at all. The only wait it makes sense is if AMD were partnered with Steam for the Steam Boxes instead of Nvidia but they're not... The 512-bit memory also makes no sense...

"TrueAudio Technology" yeah ok

It's for the hardcore gamer that runs his sound of his video card's HDMI output

TrueAudio actually sounds really awesome. It doesn't rely on the hdmi, it can output over the systems audio out. Read up on it.

Should also work on 7000 series cards.
