The likelihood of me buying an Alienware PC instead of building one is about the same as me buying into bitcoin.

A discount's a discount. But I agree that Alienware is generally overpriced. It's an ignorance tax for those uncapable of building a PC.

Isn't Alienware owned by Dell, who feel it's fine to let their employees compare gamers to ISIS? Why would any gamer buy one of their PCs?

I heard Dell chopped Alienware's build quality way down after they bought them. My bud who did repair work on them said they use the same cheap parts (mobos, etc.) as Dell's stock PCs and not to buy one.

I wouldn't be surprised. I'm old enough to remember when Dell was actually good. First they started adding bloatware, then they started skimping on quality, then they started raising the prices.

The thing that frustrates me most about Dell is the games they play when trying to use their customization options.

X will be available for this model but not that one, etc.

I bought an amazingly tricked out Alienware Aurora 3 years ago and it's been a fantastic machine; it's been at least as good as any of the machines I ever built and I haven't had a lick of trouble with it. But yes, it was about $400 more expensive than if I'd done it myself.

I feel like everyone should buy themselves a boutique gaming PC. Once. Just like everyone should buy a brand new car, once.

I'm interested in their new Triad cases but if I ever get a gaming machine built again it'll probably be from Digital Storm. That's a few years off though, I just put together a great machine to replace the Alienware so I'm not in any hurry.
