The Steam Winter Sale was a big success, even without flash sales

PCGamer.com reports the steam sale as successful, not only in sales but also at introducing new games to people.
Quote:
Despite some doomsaying about the sale being comparatively dull, the results were clearly very positive. Shifting the focus away from rapidly-changing sales and encouraging users to browse their discovery queue by offering them free Steam Trading Cards for doing so led to more attention for games that wouldn't otherwise have got it.

Was surprised to read this (elsewhere). Perhaps people were more inclined to pull the trigger, knowing the deal they were viewing was the best they would get.

Seems counter-intuitive to me (the results), but that's what they're saying and of course they wouldn't lie about it being a success, would they? lol...

This surprises me too. I think I bought less games because of this.

I only bought one game this sale. Spent $10. The absolute lowest I have ever spent on a Steam sale.

In sales past I was drawn to the store on the daily to check the flash & daily sales.
Beyond 3 flash sales, and a crop of 9 daily offerings, the more items were shown to me on sale, the less likely I was to buy anything.

Generally my purchase trend for games during sales has been down (backlog is crazy now)
In the most recent event, I was barely compelled to go to Steam to check what was available.

Moral of the story: a few key items, big discount, time limit. Steam should not waste front page space on anything with less than a 66% off sticker, and move the 80% items to the top of the page.

I bought no games during this sale. That is the first summer/winter sale in which I have done that. I too am surprised that this sale did better than past sales.

One of the reasons for this is probably due to the sale occurring over the holiday. People buying gifts are not going to be put off by not having daily discounts. The other reason was bribing people with cards to go through their queues. This gave page views to a lot of games that otherwise would not have gotten them.

Had there been both the daily discounts and the bribing for page views, I'd be curious if the revenue would have been even higher.

The upcoming Summer sale will be the real test. No holiday for forced buying, and people out of town.

They are a privately held company with no fiduciary duty to report accurate data. I believe they are manipulating the data to appear positive but that in effect they are lying.

I largely don't buy games on steam anymore as plenty of other sites have better deals.

these numbers aren't from Valve, they are from Steamspy, which monitors ownership of games on steam, using that data and knowing the prices of the games during the sale you can figure out how much they made, give or take.

As for me, I spent about as much as I always do, no real change. I did go through my discovery queue to get those cards though. I now have many more games on my wish list, games I had never heard of before. I think in that regard it was absolutely successful, and all in all I was happy with not having to spend so much time on the site during the sale.

I barely looked at this sale and purchased nothing. I guess we don't represent the majority of game buyers out there.

This I think is one of the reasons, we have all hyped Steam sales to a legendary status over the years and this has shown in Steams massive growth. We on the other hand have mostly picked the carcass clean over the past few years so our perception of the sale is one of it being poor. I feel sorry for Embulator who must own all the games they have so it must be tenfold for him.

I think Steamspy is wrong.

"Picked the carcass clean" as someone else mentioned. I bought a decent number of really cheap games. There wasn't much there I really wanted that I didn't already have.

Valve is really loaded down with crap these days. There's the occasional gem but it's rare. I still buy just about all my games from them because convenience trumps a couple bucks worth of savings.
