E3 - Am I Alone?

I'll be at E3 again this year, and this time I'm hoping to meet up with a bunch of people... former co-workers, media friends, etc. While I won't be available for the entire event, I have all of Wednesday completely schedule-free.

I'm just curious to see how many people in the EvAv community may be going as well... if you want to meet up and say "Hey what's up", or "Hey f*ck you", drop me a PM and I'll work something out. I'll also be taking pictures on the show floor - if you want a picture of a particular booth or game I'll do my best to get it up here on this thread. Just let me know before Wednesday.

Yes, you are alone. I don't attend E3 because I hate to travel and because I can't report on the show if I'm standing in a line somewhere waiting to see a game.

Sure you can just bring your smartphone.

If you pay for E3 Premium you can also jump to front of the lines FYI.

I went to E3 in '95. That was sweet. Unveiling of the N64, Mario 64 and the dawn of (good) 3D platforming, which until then was considered abysmal.

Haven't had much of an urge to go back since.

Perhaps in a few years -- once I'm back to working from home again.

I love conventions, but game developers seem to be allergic to the mid west and east coast. >.<

I'm apparently lucky enough to be part of the "E3 Alumni"... whatever that means. One perk is my registration gets automatically renewed each year. Not sure what else that gets me.

I would chop an arm off to go to an E3, that's probably because I have zero chance in ever going.

The show itself is a landfill of pretty lights and extremely loud noise. There is very little time or shelter to really appreciate the games on display, and most of the time the titles you really care about are behind closed doors (unless you are lucky to have a media pass) or simply not playable.

I remember my first E3, I walked through the doors with my badge and passed by this 12-year-old kid who was begging the security guard - bearing his soul and everything he owned - just to sneak in for a couple minutes. I worked my way around the giant showfloor booths trying to get a glimpse of Doom 3, and being told that I couldn't get in because I didn't have a media badge... and then I realized I was right there with that kid stuck outside. Of course I didn't make any of the fuss he made, but I empathised.

The show is about two things, moving product to distributors, and shmoozing the press. Well, networking is big on the agenda too... but mainly those first two. If you're a developer ith an "exhibits only" badge, you're just someone else's distraction. The big reason I go is to look at what new innovations are coming and to observe trends within my industry... what are the sorts of games that companies are putting money behind, and/or what are they betting on? It's very important research, and I take a lot of notes. It's very interesting, but it's also more work than it is fun.

Turned out my job gets free E3 passes so I went. Only played a couple of games, walked through most of the booths, got an autograph from Todd McFarlane, and got the whole set of Wii U pins. Not a bad day.
