Windows 10 Already Bigger than Linux on Steam #Windows10

Brad Chacos from PC World brings us the story.
Quote:
The final version of Windows 10 hasn’t even been available for a week yet, and it’s already more popular with gamers than any individual OS X operating system version—and all Linux operating systems combined.

Windows dominates among Steam users, with 44.91 percent using Windows 7 64-bit, and 31.65 percent using Windows 8.1 64-bit. According to the numbers, Windows 10 64-bit can already be found on 2.21 percent of Steam users’ systems, with the 32-bit variant found on another 0.09 percent.

By contrast, the most-used Mac operating system among Steam gamers is OS X “Yosemite” 10.10.3 at 1.10 percent, though when you take all available versions of Yosemite into account, it’s found on 2.4 percent of all systems. All four tracked Linux OSes combined account for a mere 0.55 percent of use.
Steam July Hardware Results

I thought everyone would jump ship from Windows once Linux was able to play games?

People will switch to Linux if Microsoft runs them off. An anti-consumer move like making it where all apps will have to be sold through the Windows app store would do the trick. Until then, Windows will remain on top with gamers.

when using something like steam as a metric you have to keep in mind it's purpose... gaming, since windows it the only OS to support 99% of all games on the pc it's the obvious choice over linux, osx, etc

honestly gaming is likely the only thing holding linux back. If they could give linux the same gaming support as windows you'd see a lot more users.

I think this is the real news:

Quote:
Windows 7 64 bit 44.91% -1.01%
Windows 8.1 64 bit 31.85% +0.63%

not a surprise since it is free, and a lot better than win8(.1).

and there are still tons of games missing on linux, so I guess this is the primary reason. Once every game is on linux from the get go, it may change a bit, but linux is still something of a "geek" o/s

I will switch to linux when I can play the majority of my games on it. This includes new releases.

^---This!

I would imagine a vast majority of computer users have no clue at all what Linux is. Tell me that half the folks in the street wouldn't just respond... "Is that a computer language?", if they knew anything at all. Gonna be difficult to get adopted as the better goto-OS if the masses themselves are oblivious to you.

Well at least they haven't blocked openGL on windows. I'm planning in a few months to begin porting my game engine to C++ and openGL from C# and XNA so I'd be uber pissed if they did that to me otherwise I could care less if Windows 10 is more popular then Linux.

Me when I saw this post:

Brand loyalty/sticking to what's perceived to be comfortable (even when said thing might be more of a PITA -- there's really no comparison done, that's the amazing thing -- it doesn't even matter which platform is more convenient at this point) is a powerful thing.

Steamos is a waste of time, just get your favorite linux distro and install Steam. You'll be better off

I love Linux. I really do. When I have spare PC's or need to setup a server. It's always Linux. On the other hand, I want only windows on my desktop. It simply works better for interactive use like web browsing and programming.

Linux will never replace windows for gaming because it'll NEVER be as good as windows for gaming. Anything that touches the video card is simply better in Windows because that's where the good drivers are.

Are you sure? The whole point of this box is to be a game playing device (aka, PC console). Would it be more streamlined to use SteamOS?

Sure if you wanna overpay for midgrade specs. I'll stick to my actual PC that can do more than just play games. I honestly hope steamos flops.

All steamos is, is a striped down Linux distro that comes with steam already installed and is configured to auto launch it in big picture mode. There is absolutely nothing special about steamos.

It's buggy and generally useless outside of steam unless you start installing basic packages that come with other distros.

And it's a right pain in the ass to install...

You'll be a lot happier with your choice of distro then install steam.

The last part of this thread just seems like trolling, honestly.

On the other hand, whether you like them or not, it's impressive to see how MS pushes something with pure financial power - and it works.

Those of you who are still waiting for the upgrade, I wrote a little guide how to get it:
