Just found this Tim Sweeny quote. I transcribed it a while ago from a Next-Gen podcast:

We would love for Live to be a solution we could use and we're trying to work with Microsoft on it, but it's really too early to say whether or not we'll be able to support it.

We've been developing games that are community-based for more than ten years now, ever since the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament. We've had games that have had free online gameplay, free server lists, and in 2003 we shipped a game with in-game voice support, and a lot of features that gamers have now come to expect on the PC platform. A lot of these things are now features that Microsoft is planning to charge for on that platform. I like the idea of a premium service with additional features that users can buy, but it's really important to us to include a core feature set that's competitive with other games and our customers' expectations. That's the area where panorama [eh? Perhaps he meant GFWL] seems to have the biggest problem

The key problem with the service right now is that any feature that Microsoft implements and charges for, a developer can't implement themselves. As a PC developer we're used to having complete freedom in defining our feature set...That's quite a huge change for PC developers, to now have features we simply can't do.

To Microsoft's credit, they've led the way with ease of use and experience of Xbox Live, and now PC gamers are saying "we should have those kinds of features". So if we don't use Games for Windows Live obviously we're going to implement all those same kinds of features because that's now the state of the art. People want easy ways to find friends and they want voice in-game...they want clan support, they want leaderboards...they want detailed stats and things of that nature, and these are mostly Gold-level features.
Has anyone said anything GOOD about GFW/GFWL? I'm struggling to remember. :/
